Murray Dean Craven (born July 20, 1964 in Medicine Hat , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current official who played 1189 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Philadelphia Flyers , Hartford Whalers during his active career between 1980 and 2000 , Vancouver Canucks , Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Since August 2016, Craven has been Vice President of the Vegas Golden Knights .

Career

Craven first played from 1980 to 1984 for four years for the Medicine Hat Tigers from his hometown in the Western Hockey League . During this time he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in the first round in 17th position. They used him in the 1982/83 season in the NHL, but decided, despite Craven's eleven points in 31 games, that he should continue to develop in the WHL for the time being. After the Canadian had dominated the WHL with 94 points in 48 games in the 1983/84 season, the Red Wings finally brought him back to the NHL during the season.

Before the 1984/85 season, the Red Wings transferred Joe Paterson and him to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Darryl Sittler . With the Flyers, the center quickly established itself in the team roster and twice reached the final of the Stanley Cup , where Philadelphia was defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in five and seven games respectively. Craven stayed in Philadelphia until November 1991 and had his best year in the NHL in the 1987/88 season with 76 points in 72 games before he was given up for Kevin Dineen to the Hartford Whalers .

The Canadian stayed with the Whalers in New England for two years before moving to the Vancouver Canucks at the end of the transfer window in March 1993 , as Hartford had missed the playoffs. In Vancouver he only stayed until the end of the 1993/94 season and was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks after the lockout ended before the start of the 1994/95 season . With the Blackhawks he reached the final of the Western Conference in the first season , from which his ex-club from Vancouver emerged as the winner. After the 1996/97 season , the Canadian moved to the San Jose Sharks , where he spent the last three years of his career. After a hernia operation and a poor start to the 1999/2000 game year with only two goal preparations in 19 games, the Sharks dismissed him, whereupon Craven ended his career.

In August 2016, Craven officially returned to the NHL stage when he was named vice president of the Vegas Golden Knights . In the previous months, he had already acted in an unofficial role as a consultant to team owner Bill Foley and had a decisive influence on the successful candidacy of the city of Las Vegas .

International

Craven took part with the Canadian national team in the 1990 and 1991 World Championships . In addition to a fourth place in 1990, he was able to win a silver medal in 1991.
