The 1991/92 NHL season was the 75th season in the National Hockey League . 22 teams played 80 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time in a row after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Chicago Blackhawks . With eleven wins in a row, the "Pens" set the playoff record that Chicago had only recently set.

The newly admitted team of the San Jose Sharks played its first season and was the first expansion team since 1979. After the California Golden Seals moved from Oakland to Cleveland in 1976, the NHL returned to the San Francisco Bay Area . With the dissolution of the 1978 merger between the Cleveland Barons and the Minnesota North Stars , the Sharks roster was largely filled by players from Minnesota by means of a dispersal draft .

A 75th anniversary logo was featured on the players' jerseys throughout the season. The start of the playoffs had to be postponed due to a players' strike in the first ten days of April. As a result of the negotiations, many franchise owners urged league president John Ziegler to resign.

As part of the pre-season, it came on September 27, 1991 to the first outdoor game in the history of the NHL. A crowd of 13,007 won the Los Angeles Kings under the floodlights of the Caesars Palace hotel the NHL outdoor game in Las Vegas in 1991 with 5: 2 against the New York Rangers .
