Patrick Jacques Roy [last name pronounced as 'ʁwa' ] (born October 5, 1965 in Québec City , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . He was active in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1985 to 2003 , playing for the Montréal Canadiens until 1995 before moving to Denver , where he played for the Colorado Avalanche for eight years . During his career, he won the Stanley Cup with Montréal in 1986 and 1993 and with Colorado in 1996 and 2001 .
Roy is considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time. As the only player in NHL history to date, he has been honored three times with the Conn Smythe Trophy and has been named Most Valuable Player of his team for each of his three Stanley Cup victories . At the same time, he is the only one who has received this honor with different teams. The Canadian also received the Vezina Trophy three times as the best goalkeeper in the league and five times earned the William M. Jennings Trophy as a goalkeeper with the lowest goalscoring . In 2006 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
He coached his son Jonathan Roy , who gave up hockey after a fight in 2008 and pursued a career as a singer. Roy denied encouraging his son to attack, but the video cameras captured him. Father and son were banned.
In the NHL, Roy was head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2013 to 2016 and was honored with the Jack Adams Award as the best coach in the league at the end of his first season . Since April 2018 he has been working again as trainer and general manager of the Remparts de Québec , a junior team from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the same role, he was in charge of the team, of which he is co-owner, from 2006 to 2013.
Career
The 185 cm tall "goalie", who wore his glove on the left, was brought into the team by the Canadiens de Montréal in the third round as 51st in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft . He played his first game in what is probably the most expensive professional league on February 23, 1985 against the Winnipeg Jets and also achieved his first NHL victory. However , he had to wait until January 15, 1986 for his first shutout , when the Canadiens met the Winnipeg Jets again and won 4-0. With Montreal he won the Stanley Cup in 1986 and 1993 .
When he fell out with coach Mario Tremblay at the beginning of the 1995/96 season , he moved to the Colorado Avalanche together with Mike Keane in exchange for Andrei Kowalenko , Martin Ručínský and Jocelyn Thibault . There he was immediately number one in goal and achieved other successes with this club, including Stanley Cup victories in 1996 and 2001. In his long career, for example, he has played eight series of 30 victories in a row . He was also honored three times as the best goalie with the Vezina Trophy and as the best player in the play-offs with the Conn Smythe Trophy . After a long career of victories and defeats in the NHL, he said goodbye to ice hockey in 2003.
Roy's shirt with the shirt number 33 was hung under the ceiling by the Colorado Avalanche on October 28, 2003, so that a Colorado Avalanche player is never again allowed to choose this shirt number. In November 2008, his shirt number was also blocked by the Canadiens, which met with a lot of response because Roy and the Canadiens split up in a dispute in 1995. In 2006 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame . His successor at the Avs was David Aebischer from Switzerland .
After the end of his career he became vice-president of the Remparts de Québec , which play in the Canadian junior league QMJHL . He is also the general manager and owner of the team. In September 2005 he also became the team's coach and in May 2006 his team won the Memorial Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian junior ice hockey.
On May 23, 2013, Patrick Roy was introduced as the new head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. In addition, he received the post of Vice President Of Hockey Operations. In his first season as head coach of the Avalanche, he led the team to their first division title in eleven years. At the end of the season he was honored with the Jack Adams Award for his performance . In the following two seasons, however, the Avs missed the playoffs, so Roy resigned from his offices in August 2016. In April 2018, he returned to the Remparts de Québec as head coach and general manager.
