The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2001 began on April 11, 2001 and ended on June 9, 2001 with the 4-3 win of the Colorado Avalanche over the New Jersey Devils . For the Avalanche, who placed the top scorer in the playoffs in Joe Sakic , it was also the second title win in the second final after 1996. Colorado also provided goalkeeper Patrick Roy as the most valuable player this post-season , making Roy the first player in league history to be awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy three times . The New Jersey Devils, however, were defeated for the first time in their third final in franchise history after 1995 and the previous year 2000.
In addition, the playoffs of 2001 marked the first time since 1989 and the last time (as of playoffs 2019) that the two teams seeded in first place faced each other in the final.
mode
After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.
Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .
For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner
The Stanley Cup winner Colorado Avalanche traditionally had a total of 48 people, including 24 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. These included assistant coach Bryan Trottier , who won the Stanley Cup six times as a player with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins , and Hall of Famer Michel Goulet , who was denied this success as a player. Also Orval Tessier as a scout was considered. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. Bryan Muir , who was immortalized with just eight games in the regular season and three playoff games on the Cup, benefited from one of these .
The 24 players in Colorado are made up of two goalkeepers, nine defenders and 13 attackers. There were five Europeans in the squad . David Aebischer was the first Swiss to win the Stanley Cup. Ray Bourque was already in his 22nd and final NHL season when he won his first Stanley Cup.
