Martin Škoula (* 28. October 1979 in Litoměřice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1995 to 2014 among other 859 games for the Colorado Avalanche , Dallas Stars , Minnesota Wild and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . He was also active for HK Awangard Omsk and HC Slovan Bratislava in the Continental Hockey League . The multiple Czech international and medalist celebrated his greatest success at world championships in the service of the Colorado Avalanche by winning the Stanley Cup in 2001 .
Career
Škoula was drawn in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in 17th place by the Colorado Avalanche after playing two seasons in his home country and one season with the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League . In the 2000/01 season he won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche . In 2002 he took part with the Czech national team at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
On February 21, 2004, Škoula was transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , the Colorado Avalanche received Kurt Sauer and a four-round draft pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft . His contract expired at the end of the season and was not renewed. The lockout of the NHL season 2004/05 he played over at his youth club HC Chemopetrol Litvínov . In the 2005/06 season he was initially a so-called unrestricted free agent before he signed a contract with the Dallas Stars on August 3, 2005 in Texas . This employment relationship was also short-lived and in March 2006 he was transferred to the Minnesota Wild together with Shawn Belle in exchange for Willie Mitchell and a second-round draft pick for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft . On September 29, 2009, Martin Škoula signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins .
In March 2010 he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs together with Luca Caputi in exchange for Olexij Ponikarowskyj . Less than twelve hours later it was passed on to the New Jersey Devils . For the 2010/11 season he was committed by HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League and played for Omsk until 2012. Shortly after the start of the 2012 season, he moved within the KHL to HC Lev Prague . From January 2013, Škoula was used by HC Lev in the second division of the Czech Republic, the 1st division , after he had initially been placed on the KHL waiver list.
In the 2013/14 season he was active for HC Slovan Bratislava before he was signed in May 2014 by the Bílí Tygři Liberec from the Czech Extraliga and completed ten additional Extraliga games for them. He officially ended his career in the summer of 2015.
