Gianluca "Luca" Caputi (born October 1, 1988 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who has played in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs, among others .

Career

Luca Caputi began his career in his hometown of Toronto . In the 2003/04 season he played for the Toronto Junior Canadiens in the Greater Toronto Hockey League . He then moved to the Ontario Hockey League for the Mississauga IceDogs . After two seasons with a total of only nine scorer points, the striker was able to score 65 points in 68 games in the 2006/07 season and thus made a decisive contribution to the play-off participation of his team. Many scouts gave Caputi a good chance of being selected in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft due to his size and good technical skills . Ultimately, the Pittsburgh Penguins secured the rights to him in the fourth round in 111th place. The main reason for the later choice were mainly deficits in physical play. In 2007 Caputi started the season with the Niagara IceDogs and was able to increase his points yield as a front row striker.

On April 23, 2008 he signed a three-year contract with his NHL team and was active in the AHL play-offs for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , with whom he was defeated by the Chicago Wolves in the final of the Calder Cup . In the 2008/09 season Caputi first played in the American Hockey League and made his debut in the National Hockey League on February 3, 2009 in the game against the Montréal Canadiens . 14 seconds after he hit the ice for the first time, he scored 1-0 for the Penguins. Four more games followed before the striker was sent back to the farm team. On March 4, 2009, he was ordered to the Wheeling Nailers in the third class ECHL for disciplinary reasons . After three games with three points, management brought Caputi back to the AHL.

In March 2010 he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs together with Martin Škoula in exchange for Olexij Ponikarowskyj . The 2009/10 season ended the offensive player in the NHL squad of the Leafs, for which he posted a hit and five assists in 19 games. The following season, Caputi was sent to the Toronto Marlies after the training camp in the farm team , with the Canadian also gaining game practice in the NHL during the season. After he had not managed to secure a place in the Toronto NHL squad for the 2011/12 season , he only played in the Leafs AHL farm team until the beginning of 2012.

On January 3, 2012, they transferred him to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Nicolas Deschamps . The following season he spent exclusively in the minor leagues and mainly acted with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. He was also on the ice in 15 ECHL games for the Fort Wayne Comets . For the 2013/14 season he signed a one-year contract with the Swedish second division club VIK Västerås HK with play in HockeyAllsvenskan . He let his career end in the following season with league rivals IK Oskarshamn .

After finishing his active career, Caputi started working as a coach. First he was from 2015 to 2018 as an assistant coach for the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League behind the gang. He has been an Associate Coach at Kingston Frontenacs since the 2018/19 season .
