history

A group around owner Howard Dolgon bought the Hamilton Canucks in 1994 and relocated the franchise to Syracuse , New York, before the 1994/95 season . The new team was nicknamed Crunch and, after 14 years of abstinence from professional ice hockey, filled the void in the city after the Syracuse Firebirds were dissolved in 1980 . The first official game was played on September 30, 1994 at the War Memorial at Oncenter and ended in a 7-7 draw, Lonny Bohonos was the first goalscorer in team history. In their inaugural season, the Crunch started with Jack McIlhargey as head coach behind the gang. Before the start of the season, a cooperation with the Vancouver Canucks from the National Hockey League had been concluded, so that Syracuse Crunch acted as their farm team . In addition to Lonny Bohonos, who scored the first goal in the team's history, the team-internal top scorer Dan Kesa , "Tough Guy" Scott Walker , defender Adrian Aucoin and rookie Michael Peca played in the foreground in the 1994/95 season . The team finished fifth and last place in the Southern Division after the end of the regular season, which was mainly due to the inadequate defensive performance.

For the 1995/96 season , Syracuse was divided into the Central Division due to an expansion of the AHL. This time it was possible to reach the playoffs for the first time, despite a negative overall balance, as only two of the 18 teams were not admitted to the final round. After a defeat in the opening game of the first round series against the Binghamton Rangers , the Crunch won three encounters in a row and secured a place in the next round. In this they met the Baltimore Bandits and lost their first encounter again, before a 3-1 lead in the series was played out with three wins in a row. The Bandits equalized in the series through two successes and forced a decisive seventh game in the Baltimore Arena . In this game the Crunch prevailed with 5: 4; the qualification for the third round was the result. The third encounter in the series was victorious against the Rochester Americans ; in the remaining four games, the "Amerks" prevailed, scoring the decisive goal in overtime in the fifth game and then beating the Portland Pirates in the Calder Cup finals . The most successful playoff scorer on the Crunch side was Lonny Bohonos with 14 goals and 22 points.

You were the Columbus Blue Jackets ( NHL ) farm team from 2000 to 2010 and had your own farm team , the Dayton Bombers ( ECHL ). From 2010 to 2012 they worked with the Anaheim Ducks . Since the 2012/13 season there has been a collaboration with the Tampa Bay Lightning .
