There the Enforcer was able to increase both his points and his minutes in the penalty box in the three seasons. For the 1997/98 season, the Enforcer decided after he had not been considered in any of the previous NHL Entry Drafts by the Franchises of the National Hockey League to go to Dalhousie University . With the university team he ran this season in the ice hockey leagues of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union , but was committed towards the end of the season by the Saint John Flames from the American Hockey League , where he ended the season.
In the summer of 1998, the winger received his first professional contract when the Calgary Flames signed him from the NHL. However, these continued to use him in the following two seasons with their farm teams , the Saint John Flames in the AHL and the Johnstown Chiefs in the East Coast Hockey League , which Shelley did not come to NHL use. When his expired at the end of the 1999/2000 season , the Columbus Blue Jackets secured the services of the free agent . At first he only played there at the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, before he came to his first NHL assignment in February 2001. This was the only use for this season. After another year that he had spent between Columbus and Syracuse, he made the final jump into the squad of the Blue Jackets for the 2002/03 season , which he remained loyal to until the end of the 2003/04 season .
Due to the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Shelley moved to Europe and played a total of 14 games in the Finnish SM-liiga for JYP Jyväskylä before returning to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2005/06 season and his best offensive season with ten Points completed. Also in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons , the Canadian had his place in the squad and brought his toughness before he was transferred to the San Jose Sharks on January 29, 2008 for a sixth round draft in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft . These required both a player with the characteristics of Shelley and a player for the position of the left winger. In his 31 games for San Jose, he was able to convince with his physical presence and unusual qualities on the offensive, which led to the fact that the management extended his contract by two years after the end of the season. Shelley stayed in his role as Enforcer until mid-February 2010 with the Northern Californians before moving to the New York Rangers for a draft pick . On July 1, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers . After he was not offered a new contract after the season, he ended his active career on August 9, 2013 and rejoined the Columbus Blue Jackets.
