The 2001/02 season was the 66th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 27 teams played 80 matches each in the regular season. The AHL played for the penultimate time with 6 divisions. The best regular season team were the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , while the Chicago Wolves won their first Calder Cup in the playoffs . Compared to the previous season, the number of teams increased by seven, which was mainly due to the dissolution of the International Hockey League and the takeover of some IHL franchises.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Louisville Panthers went inactive.
- The Kentucky Thoroughblades were relocated to Cleveland , Ohio , and played as Cleveland Barons from then on .
- In the course of a league expansion, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were added.
- In the course of a league expansion, the Manchester Monarchs were added.
The following six teams from the International Hockey League were accepted into the AHL:
- The Chicago Wolves from Chicago , Illinois .
- The Grand Rapids Griffins off Grand Rapids , Michigan .
- The Houston Eros from Houston , Texas .
- The Manitoba Mosses from Winnipeg , Manitoba .
- The Milwaukee Admirals from Milwaukee , Wisconsin .
- The Utah Grizzlies from Salt Lake City , Utah .
