The 2001/02 season was the 66th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 27 teams played 80 matches each in the regular season. The AHL played for the penultimate time with 6 divisions. The best regular season team were the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , while the Chicago Wolves won their first Calder Cup in the playoffs . Compared to the previous season, the number of teams increased by seven, which was mainly due to the dissolution of the International Hockey League and the takeover of some IHL franchises.
