Dan Snyder (born February 23, 1978 in Elmira , Ontario , † October 5, 2003 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (center) who played for the Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League from 2000 to 2003 .

Career

Dan Snyder began his career in 1995 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Platers . Despite good performances, he was not drafted by any NHL team . In total, he played four years in the OHL, of which his last was his best with 94 points.

He received in 1999 a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers , which it initially for two years to their IHL - farm team , the Orlando Solar Bears , sent. 2000/01 he played his first two games for Atlanta in the NHL. 2001 the IHL broke up and Snyder moved to the American Hockey League for the Chicago Wolves . He also got some assignments for Atlanta. In the 2002/03 season he took another step forward. He was allowed to play 36 times in the NHL and scored 14 points.

On September 29, 2003, he was seriously injured when the Ferrari 360 Modena, driven by teammate Dany Heatley , crashed into a wall. Both were thrown out of the car. Snyder suffered a fractured skull and severe brain injuries. He fell into a coma after emergency surgery. He died six days later on October 5th from injuries associated with an infection.

Dany Heatley was tried and found guilty of Snyder's death. Heatley received a three-year suspended sentence. Snyder's family forgave Heatley and remain intimate with him.

After Snyder's death, the OHL renamed their prize, which they award each year to the most humanitarian player, the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy .

During the 2006-07 season , Snyder's parents traveled to every city with an NHL team to educate people about the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation and to raise funds. Players and teams also contributed jerseys, clubs and other signed items to be auctioned for the benefit of the charity.

In 2009, the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena opened in Snyder's hometown of Elmira .
