Turner Cup

The Turner Cup was an ice hockey trophy that was awarded to the winner of the International Hockey League each year from 1945 to 2001 . From 2007 to 2010 the trophy was awarded to the winner of a league of the same name , which continued the tradition of the IHL.

history

The Joseph Turner Memorial Cup, or Turner Cup for short, was named after the Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper Joe Turner , who was killed in World War II . He led the Indianapolis Capitals from the American Hockey League in 1941 to win the Calder Cup .

The Turner Cup is 1.20 meters high and consists of eight rings on which a bowl sits. The names of the teams and their members that won the playoffs of the International Hockey League were engraved on the rings.

In May 1990 the Turner Cup was lost during championship celebrations of the Indianapolis Ice and was recovered in several parts by the police a few days later. It is unclear whether the trophy was stolen or simply forgotten by the players in a bar or on the street. The Turner Cup has been repaired and is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto .

From 2007 to 2010 the Turner Cup was reactivated and awarded to the winner of the new International Hockey League .
