The Atlanta Knights were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Atlanta , Georgia . The venue for the Knights was the Omni Coliseum .

history

The Atlanta Knights were founded in 1992 as a franchise of the International Hockey League . Already in their first season, the team reached the playoff semi-finals before winning the Turner Cup in the 1993/94 season . In the final, the team from beating Georgia , the Fort Wayne Komets series best-of-seven-in with 2: 4. The Knights coach was John Paris Jr. , who was the first African American to ever coach a top North American team. Subsequently, Atlanta, which among other things in the 1992/93 season with Manon Rhéaume used the first woman in the position of goalkeeper in professional senior ice hockey, could not build on this success and were eliminated between two times in the first playoff round. After negotiations began on the return of a National Hockey League team to Atlanta and the Omni Coliseum was to be demolished the following year, those responsible decided to relocate the franchise to the city of Quebec , where it was renamed Rafales de Québec took part in the IHL game operations.
