The Columbus Owls were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Columbus , Ohio .

history

The California Golden Seals from the National Hockey League sold their farm team from the International Hockey League , the Columbus Golden Seals , in 1973 , after which the franchise was named Columbus Owls by its new owners. In the first two years of their existence, the Columbus Owls reached second place in the South Division. Then they finished the season twice in fourth and thus last place in their division, but still qualified for the playoffs for the Turner Cup in the 1976/77 season , in which they were eliminated in the first round. For all those four years, Moe Bartoli was the Owls' trainer. Following the 1976/77 season, the franchise was moved to Dayton , Ohio , where it then took part in the IHL's gaming operations under the name Dayton Owls .
