The Toledo Mercurys were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Toledo , Ohio . The venue for the Mercurys was the Toledo Sports Arena .

history

The club was founded in 1947 and played in the International Hockey League until 1949. During this time, the club was able to win the Turner Cup , the championship of the IHL, in 1947/48 and again reach the final in 1948/49, which was lost. In the 1948/49 season, the Mercurys were active in both the North and South Divisions, as the team owners at the time wanted to play more league games. In the summer of 1949, the club played under the name Toledo Buckeyes in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League , but only returned to the IHL a year later under the old name.

There the Mercurys were able to win the Turner Cup again in the seasons 1950/51 and 1951/52 when the club defeated the Grand Rapids Rockets . For the 1955/56 season, the Toledo Mercurys were renamed Toledo-Marion Mercurys and played a few of their home games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Marion , Ohio. This year the Mercurys reached the play-off final for the fifth time in their club's history. Then the team ran again from the 1956/57 season under the name Toledo Mercurys in the International Hockey League.

Between 1959 and 1960, the club played its home games at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis and at that time were known as Toledo-St. Louis Mercurys known. Two more seasons followed in the IHL before the club disbanded in 1962.
