The Charlotte Checkers were an American ice hockey franchise of the Eastern Hockey League and Southern Hockey League based in Charlotte , North Carolina .

history

The franchise was founded in Baltimore , Maryland under the name Baltimore Clippers as a member of the Eastern Hockey League . When their own stadium fell victim to a fire, the team was relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, five game days before the end of the 1955/56 season and renamed Charlotte Rebels. The team spent the next four years under the name Charlotte Clippers before adopting the name Charlotte Checkers. When the Eastern Hockey League was dissolved in 1973, the Checkers moved to the Southern Hockey League . In 1975 and 1976, the Checkers occupied first place in the Southern Hockey League after the regular season and won the league championship in the playoffs. That made them the most successful team in the league. After the 1976/77 season ended prematurely for financial reasons and the league was discontinued, the Charlotte Checkers also stopped playing.

It was not until 1993 that a team of the same name in the East Coast Hockey League started playing again and continued the tradition of the Charlotte Checkers.
