The Hampton Gulls were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Hampton , Virginia . The Gulls' venue was the Hampton Coliseum .

history

The Hampton Gulls were founded in 1974 as a franchise for the Southern Hockey League . There they served as the farm team for the Cincinnati Stingers from the World Hockey Association . After the SHL was dissolved in 1977, the Hampton Gulls were given the opportunity to join the American Hockey League as an expansion team . During the 1977/78 season, however, the team had to stop playing due to financial difficulties in the higher league and the franchise was dissolved.

Before that, the Virginia Wings from the AHL (1972–1975) played in the region . The void left by the breakup of the Hampton Gulls in the region was the Hampton Road Gulls from the Atlantic Coast Hockey League (1982-1983), the Hampton Roads Admirals from the East Coast Hockey League (1989-2000) and finally the Norfolk Admirals from the American Hockey League (since 2000) filled.
