The Toronto Roadrunners were a Canadian ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Toronto , Ontario . The venue for the Roadrunners was the Ricoh Coliseum .

history

Lyle Abrhams, the club's owner at the time, brought the Roadrunners to Toronto in 2003 as the Edmonton Oilers farm team from the National Hockey League . The successor to the Hamilton Bulldogs began playing in the American Hockey League for the 2003/2004 season. However, due to low audience numbers, an inadequate business model and a legal battle with officials over the venue, the team was relocated to Edmonton after just one year as Edmonton Road Runners . Another reason was the lockout in the 2004/2005 NHL season. In their only AHL season, the Roadrunners were eliminated by the Cleveland Barons 2-1 after three games in the qualifying round for the playoffs.

Since Abrhams owned the rights to the name and logo and not the Edmonton Oilers , the team was re-established as Phoenix RoadRunners in the ECHL . The gap left in Toronto was filled by the Toronto Marlies in 2005 .
