The Baltimore Skipjacks were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Baltimore , Maryland . The venue for the Skipjacks was the Baltimore Arena .

history

The Baltimore Skipjacks, which were founded in 1981, played in their premiere season in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League , before they merged with the Erie Blades from the American Hockey League before the 1982/83 season , in which they played from then on. The coach of the Erie Blades, Lou Angotti , and 16 other players on the team switched to the skipjacks. As the only player from Baltimore's founding season, Tom Jacobs stayed with the team. The greatest success in the club's history was next to winning the regular 1983/84 season, reaching the final of the Calder Cup in the 1984/85 season . In the best-of-seven series, Baltimore lost to the Sherbrooke Canadiens 2: 4.

Prior to the 1993/94 season , the team was relocated to Portland , Maine , where it has since played as the Portland Pirates . The gap created in Baltimore was filled by the Baltimore Bandits , who were also active in the American Hockey League from 1995 to 1997 .
