Stéphane Jean-Gilles Richer (born April 28, 1966 in Hull , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and current coach , who during his active career from 1992 to 1995 for the Tampa Bay Lightning , Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers played in the National Hockey League . Since May 2017 he has been sports director at Eisbären Berlin .
Career
After a few years in his homeland with the Hull Olympiques in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League , Richer completed his first professional years in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League . From 1992 to 1995 he played in the National Hockey League . His clubs were the Boston Bruins , Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning . He came to a total of 27 NHL appearances, but Richer was never able to prevail and played mainly in the minor leagues . In the 1994/95 season , the Canadian moved to Adler Mannheim and played there until 2002. With them he became German champions in 1997 , 1998 , 1999 and 2001 . The defender spent the 2002/03 season with the Frankfurt Lions . At the end of this season he had to end his career as a player due to a serious knee injury.
The shirt number 25, which Richer wore during his career in Mannheim , is no longer given by Adler Mannheim. For the opening of the SAP Arena in 2005, his jersey was symbolically hung under the roof of the hall. The Adler Mannheim honored Richer in particular for the outstanding successes he achieved with the team, as well as for his great fighting commitment in the Adler jersey. Along with Harold Kreis , Marcus Kuhl and René Corbet, he is one of the Mannheim players whose jersey numbers are no longer given in Mannheim.
In the 2003/04 season he worked as an assistant coach under Rich Chernomaz at the Frankfurt Lions and became German champions with them at the end of the season. During the 2004/05 season he first moved to Adler Mannheim as an assistant coach. After Helmut de Raaf's resignation , Stéphane Richer took over the position of head coach. Under his leadership, the team reached the final series against the Eisbären Berlin , which was lost. In December 2005 he was replaced by Greg Poss as a trainer in Mannheim. From January 2006 he was responsible for the Kassel Huskies . In the 2006/07 season, the Canadian was runner-up in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . In the 2007/08 season he was promoted to the DEL again with the Kassel Huskies . His contract in Kassel was valid until 2010 for the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and the DEL.
For the 2010/11 season, Richer moved to the league competitor Hamburg Freezers as a coach and sports director . In December 2010 he gave up the coaching position in order to be able to concentrate better on his work as sports director, but subsequently worked in a double function as sports director and assistant coach. In 2014 he was awarded the "DEL Manager of the Year" award. In September 2015, Richer in Hamburg received a contract extension until 2019, after the 2015/16 season he gave up his position as assistant trainer in order to only exercise the office of sports director from now on. In May 2016, the owner of Freezers, Anschutz Entertainment Group , announced that it would waive a DEL license for the 2016/17 season. Richer and all other Freezers employees were thus unemployed.
After his time in Freezers, Richer worked as a Europe Scout for the Los Angeles Kings and as a junior coordinator for the top division Hamburg Crocodiles . At the end of January 2017, he joined the Eisbären Berlin coaching staff as Uwe Krupp's assistant , and in May 2017 he was promoted from the capital city to sports director. On December 19, 2018, Richer became the polar bears' head coach after Clément Jodoin was sacked . After the 2018/19 season, Richer signed Serge Aubin as head coach and continued to serve as sports director.
