The Hamburg Freezers ( freezer Engl. = The freezer, the freezer ; official abbreviation: HHF ) were a German ice hockey team from Hamburg , the 2002-2016 in the German Ice Hockey League played. After the owner of the operating company, Anschutz Entertainment Group , could not find a buyer in a search lasting several years, he did not apply for a license for the 2016/17 season .

The professional team was operated by HEC Hamburg Eishockeyclub GmbH , which was founded in 1999 and operated as MEC Münchener Eishockey Club GmbH until 2003 . It was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Anschutz Entertainment Group and operated the Munich Barons from 1999 to 2002 . In 2005, Hamburg Freezers e. V. founded.

The greatest successes of the club, which played its home games in the 12,947-seat Barclaycard Arena (previously Color Line Arena and O 2 World Hamburg ), were reaching the play-off semi-finals in 2004 and 2014 . The club colors of the Hamburg Freezers were crystal blue and white.

history

The move from Munich to Hamburg

The Barclaycard Arena Hamburg from the air

The Hamburg Freezers were transferred to Hamburg in 2002 by their owner from Munich , where they had taken over the EV Landshut team since 1999 and played as Munich Barons . As a result, a professional ice hockey team was founded in the Hanseatic city for the first time, which played in the top German league, even if there were Hamburg clubs in the top league with Altonaer SV and Harvestehuder THC as early as the 1930s and 1950s . This was preceded by the stagnating audience figures for the Munich Barons and the financial problems there. Furthermore, the construction of the Color Line Arena in Hamburg created the conditions for permanent participation in the DEL. The shares of Spielbetriebs-GmbH were initially 70 percent owned by the Anschutz Entertainment Group, under the leadership of the US billionaire Philip F. Anschutz , and 30 percent owned by the Finn Harry Harkimo. In the summer of 2005, the Anschutz Entertainment Group took over the 30 percent from Harry Harkimo. In their first season in Hamburg, those responsible expected an average of 5,000 spectators per game.

In their first season after moving from Munich, the 2002/03 season , which began with twelve away games in a row because the Color Line Arena could not be completed in time for the start of the season, the Hamburg Freezers reached eighth place at the end of the main round, what at the same time meant the playoff participation. There they lost in the quarter-finals against the Eisbären Berlin with 1: 4 games. Despite the early departure, the season was a success: the average attendance far exceeded all expectations and an unprecedented ice hockey euphoria spread across the Hanseatic city . An average of 10,713 spectators attended the Freezers' 26 home games.

At the beginning of the second season , the Canadian Dave King, an NHL experienced coach, was committed. The squad was also reinforced with numerous professionals from the North American professional leagues AHL / NHL. Subsequently, after the main round, the team reached their best position so far, third place in the table. In the subsequent playoffs, the club first defeated the then championship favorites Adler Mannheim in a best of seven series with 4-2 victories in the quarter -finals. The Freezers lost the semifinals against the eventual German champions , the Frankfurt Lions . The number of viewers could be increased, also due to the short-term successes that the team was able to achieve. In the 2003/04 game year, an average of 12,055 fans attended Hamburg's games. This meant that the Color Line Arena was fully occupied at almost every home game. On 2 February 2004, the club was awarded the Marketing Award Sports in the category sporting event excellent.

The 2004/05 season was marked by the players' strike in the NHL. Numerous players from the National Hockey League switched to the DEL at the beginning of the season to bridge the time of the lockout . For example, while the Eisbären Berlin with Olaf Kolzig , Erik Cole and Nathan Dempsey committed three professionals from North America, the Freezers refrained from taking players from the NHL under contract. Four game days before the end of the preliminary round, coach Dave King was given leave of absence by the Hamburg officials for fear of not reaching the play-offs. In seventh place, the club had reduced the distance to six points in ninth. The previous assistant coach Mike Schmidt became interim trainer . The Freezers finished the preliminary round as eighth in the table, reached the play-offs and were then eliminated again in the quarter-finals against the Frankfurt Lions after six games with 2: 4. On October 25, 2005, the Freezers lost 4-1 to EHC Munich in their former home . The second division threw the DEL club out of the DEB cup .

For the 2005/06 season , three players, Benoît Gratton , François Fortier and Marc Beaucage , were committed, who together formed the parade series of the Freezers, the so-called "French Connection". With 132 scorer points achieved , this series played a major role in reaching the play-offs again. This season, the Freezers needed a total of seven goalkeepers due to an injury misery. After the three regular goalkeepers Boris Rousson , Steffen Karg and Tobias Güttner were injured within a week in November , the Eisbären Berlin helped out and loaned Youri Ziffzer to Hamburg for two games, Roland Schröder was signed for a month as a backup . With Roman Čechmánek , those responsible were finally able to sign a new first goalkeeper. He was also injured a short time later and was represented by Tobias Güttner. Since Güttner was later also out for a long time and Hamburg again had only one goalie with Roland Schröder, Berlin helped out again, this time Sebastian Stefaniszin came for four games. The Freezers finished the regular season in sixth place in the table and met third-placed DEG Metro Stars in the playoff quarter-finals . As in the previous year, the club was eliminated in the first playoff round (2: 4).

In the 2006/07 season , the Freezers started with Mike Schmidt as coach, for whom it was the second season in which he starts at the Freezers as head coach, and with Bob Leslie as assistant coach, who replaced Doug Bradley and André Lebrun as Goalkeeping coach. Due to the poor team performance and the placement of the Hamburg Freezers in eleventh place in the table on matchday 24, Mike Schmidt's contractual relationship was terminated on November 25, 2006, after the defeat the day before at the Iserlohn Roosters . Bill Stewart was presented as the new head coach . Despite initial success under Stewart (best DEL team 2007), the Freezers gambled away the direct qualification for the play-offs on the last day of the game at the Nürnberg Ice Tigers and then had to qualify for the final round via the pre-play-offs. After winning against the Krefeld Pinguine, the team reached the play-off semi-finals, which were lost to the DEG Metro Stars. The series against DEG was overshadowed by a racist incident: Marc Beaucage is said to have insulted the colored DEG player Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre , allegedly racist. However, the incident was shelved a short time later after the two players met for discussion.

The players warming up

Despite top-class reinforcements, the 2007/08 season was anything but desired and criticism from fans and the media arose. As a result, structural changes were announced in January 2008: Boris Capla , managing director of Hamburg Freezers, was supposed to deal exclusively with the club's administrative issues and withdraw from the sporting field. Bob Leslie , previously assistant coach, was promoted to sports manager. For this purpose, the contract of head coach Bill Stewart was extended for another year. In terms of sport, the Hamburg team could not convince again. With a winning streak of eight wins in a row at the end of the season, the Freezers were able to finish the main round in seventh place and thus reach the qualifying round for the playoffs. With two wins against ERC Ingolstadt in the pre-play-offs, the Freezers qualified for the finals. There the team was defeated by the Eisbären Berlin. The number of viewers was no longer satisfactory and fell far short of expectations. On average, only 8,834 spectators came to Hamburg's home games. This was a minus of 1,459 compared to the previous season.

2008 to 2010: Investment in the future and sporting misery

The association's largest project was the initiation of a third arena in Hamburg. A competence center for ice hockey and various ball sports was built right next to the main venue, the Color Line Arena. The Volksbank Arena offers the public since November 1, 2008 after 18 months of construction opportunities for skating, the Freezers, their youth teams and other clubs hamburgische train there. This was made possible by the Alexander Otto Sports Foundation, whose board of trustees includes President Andreas Mattner and other board members of the Freezers.

As in the previous season, the 2008/09 season was not successful. On December 13, 2008, the Freezers' management finally parted ways with head coach Bill Stewart after a 4-0 home defeat to Straubing . As a successor, the club management signed Paul Gardner , with whom the team reached eighth place at the end of the main round and thus, as in the two years before, qualified for the pre-play-offs. There the team won the best of three series against the Frankfurt Lions and was thus qualified for the play-offs. In the quarter-finals, the Hamburg Freezers met the Eisbären Berlin, who were defeated in four games. After the minimum sporting goal was achieved in the preseason with eighth place in the main round, the club management extended the contract with head coach Paul Gardner for another year. After the dismissal of sports director Bob Leslie , Boris Capla took care of the sports area again.

On September 29, 2009, the Hamburg Freezers announced the immediate leave of absence for managing director Boris Capla. Capla was blamed for the sporting plight of Hamburg's six defeats in a row. Detlev Kornett and Moritz Hillebrand (both Anschutz Entertainment Group) took over the management of the club temporarily. On December 1, 2009, Michaelpfad took over the position of managing director at Hamburg Freezers. The 2009/10 season was disappointing for the Freezers and ended in penultimate place in the table. For the first time in their history they missed the play-offs. After the end of the season, numerous players as well as coach Paul Gardner and assistant coach Daniel Naud had to leave the Freezers.

2010 to 2016: Resumption of sport and withdrawal from gaming

For the 2010/11 season , Stéphane Richer was introduced as coach and new sporting director, and he handed over the post as coach to Benoit Laporte during the current season . In December 2010, Hamburg signed long-time NHL professional Christoph Schubert from the Atlanta Thrashers , who at that time was playing on loan at the Swedish club Frölunda Indians . In terms of sport, the club finished the DEL season in 11th place and missed the pre-playoffs on the last day of the match due to a 4-1 defeat at the eventual German champions Eisbären Berlin . Thereupon the decision was made on the part of those responsible for a renewed change in personnel within the team, whereupon the captain Alexander Barta had to leave the Freezers after six years of membership and a total of 13 positions were filled. a. with John Curry as the new goalkeeper and NHL experienced Serge Aubin .

The 2011/12 season was characterized by a sporty recovery in Hamburg, and in the meantime the league was even led as the front runner. As part of the NHL Season Opening in Europe on October 4th, the NHL club LA Kings visited the Freezers for a test match, which the Americans won 5: 4. The refrigerators ended the DEL season in 5th place and qualified directly for the quarter-finals of the play-offs . There they played against the Adler Mannheim and lost the series 4-1. Overall, however, the past season was rated as a sporting and economic success, the average attendance of 9221 visitors in the main round was well above that of previous years.

For the 2012/13 season there were fewer personnel changes than before, due to the departure of Curry, the then German national goalkeeper Dimitrij Kotschnew , who had been active in the KHL to date , was committed to the goalkeeping position . Due to the so-called lockout player strike in the NHL, numerous renowned professionals switched to the DEL and other European leagues, and the Freezers were able to agree on a contract with the Dallas Stars striker Jamie Benn . There was also a profound change within the management of the association, managing director Michaelpfad was dismissed and replaced by Uwe Frommhold. Overall, the season confirmed the sporting consolidation process of the Freezers that had begun in the previous year, as the main round could again be completed in 5th place. In the play-off quarter-finals you had to admit defeat again, this time you lost to the brother club Eisbären Berlin in the series with 2: 4.

The following season 2013/14 was to be the Hamburg Freezers' most successful season to date. After a sporty decline at the beginning of the season, where they were now at the bottom of the table, the club set a league record with 19 home wins in a row. In particular, the goalkeeper duo around Kotschnew and Sébastien Caron , who was newly signed during the season, as well as the outstanding attack series with Jerome Flaake , Garrett Festerling and David Wolf were largely responsible for the success. You ended the season as the main round first and met in the quarter-finals of the play-offs on the Iserlohn Roosters . Hamburg won the series 4-2 and qualified for a play-off semi-final for the first time since 2005 . After six games they lost the semi-final series 2: 4 against the eventual German champions ERC Ingolstadt , the dispute between Hamburg's David Wolf and ERC professional Benedikt Schopper in game 4. After the season, sports director Stephane Richer received the Awarded "DEL Manager of the Year" while David Wolf moved to the NHL to the Calgary Flames .

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , similar to the previous year, they had a bad start in sport. After Hamburg was still at the bottom of the table with 0 points on matchday 4 and could not win in the Champions Hockey League , the longest-serving Freezers coach Benoit Laporte was dismissed and replaced by his previous assistant coach Serge Aubin . Under Aubin, the team was able to stabilize sporty and ended the main round despite several long-term injuries in the squad at No. 4. In particular, made before the season commitment of striker Kevin Clark should prove valuable, the Canadians set with 32 gates a new club record and was subsequently elected both striker and player of the year in the DEL. In the quarter-finals of the play-offs they met Düsseldorfer EG and were eliminated by a 1: 2 defeat in the decisive game 7 of the Best of Seven series.

Overview of the collected donations from the crowdfunding campaign

The 2015/16 season was disappointing for the Freezers. They missed participation in the pre-playoffs with 72 points and finished eleventh. On May 18, 2016, Anschutz Entertainment Group announced that it would not apply for a license for the 2016/17 season if no buyer was found for the operating company by May 24. She had been looking for a buyer for the operating company since 2011, which had posted a balance sheet loss of 54 million euros by 2015. After no buyer was found by May 24th, the Anschutz Entertainment Group decided not to apply for a license. Previously, the team, especially captain Christoph Schubert , fans like Frederik Gutzeit (initiator of the crowdfunding campaign) and supporters such as Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fürste also tried to find a buyer and collected 1.2 million euros, including over 560,000 euros via crowdfunding . According to a press release from AEG Europe, this amount is insufficient to compensate for the considerable budget shortfall, for which AEG was no longer ready.

The first trainer for the Hamburg Freezers after moving from Munich was Canadian Sean Simpson , who had been with the Munich Barons since 1999 . Simpson reached the play-off quarter-finals straight away with the Freezers in the 2002/03 season after finishing eighth after the main round. In the summer of 2003, after he returned to Switzerland for EV Zug , he was replaced by his compatriot Dave King , with whom the team reached the play-off semi-finals in the 2003/04 season . On March 2, 2005, King was released. His successor was the previous assistant coach Mike Schmidt , who was in office until November 25, 2006. Schmidt, the current co-trainer of DEG Metro Stars , was initially only an interim trainer, but was later given a contract as a trainer.

He was followed by Italo-Canadian Bill Stewart , who qualified with the team in 2006 , 2007 and 2008 for the first round of the play-offs, but lost there every time. His contract was extended after the 2007/08 season despite continued criticism from fans and the team's unfulfilled goals. After poor team performance and an unsatisfactory table situation in the following season , Stewart was on leave in December 2008 from his service as head coach. After Bob Leslie then headed the training for five days, the club management engaged Paul Gardner on December 18, 2008 , whose contract was extended in the summer of 2009 to the end of the 2009/10 season. In the 2010/2011 season Stéphane Richer was a coach until he was replaced by Benoît Laporte .

After an unsuccessful start to the 2014 season and participation in the Champions Hockey League without a win, the leave of absence for Benoît Laporte was announced at a press conference on September 25, 2014 . His previous assistant coach Serge Aubin took over his position as coach.

The Hamburg Freezers e. V. had with the Freezers Juniors a youth team that was recruited from various North German clubs. Every year he invested a mid five-digit amount in youth work and from 2008 employed full-time junior trainers. From 2008 to 2011 Morgan Svensson was employed as a junior coach, who was followed by Boris Rousson in the summer of 2011 .

In 2011 the HEC Young 2011 e. V., which cooperated with the HSV , the Crocodiles Hamburg and the Molot Ice Hockey Club and took over the HSV student Bundesliga team as HSV Young Freezers for the 2012/13 season. The HEC Young 2011 e. V. also ran the Freezers running school. The HSV Young Freezers played in the German junior league from 2014 to 2016 .

Venue

The team played its home games in the Barclaycard Arena (previously Color Line Arena and O 2 World Hamburg ) in Hamburg. When it opened in November 2002, the arena was considered the most modern multifunctional arena in Europe . With an average of around 11,000 spectators per game, the Hamburg Freezers were initially one of the best-attended ice hockey teams in Europe. In their premiere season in 2002/03, the Freezers immediately achieved third place in the European standings, with an average of 10,000 visitors per home game, behind SC Bern (12,359 visitors) and the Kölner Haien (11,921 visitors). The Freezers defended this third place in the European audience's favor in the following seasons, but slipped to fifth place in the 2005/06 season (behind Bern, Cologne, Gothenburg, Mannheim), as the average attendance in Mannheim, for example the construction of the SAP arena increased.

In the 2007/08 season, the number of spectators collapsed due to the Freezers' appearances not being very attractive from a sporting point of view: In a total of 28 preliminary round matches, there were on average just under 8,800 visitors - the club management calculated that the season would be 9,500. The cup game against Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg was even attended by only 2,500 spectators. For the 2008/09 season, the management of the Hamburg Freezers calculated an average of 9,500 viewers. However, the actual average attendance was just under 8,000. During the 2009/10 season, which ended in penultimate place in the table, an average of 6,993 spectators came to the arena.

Since November 4, 2008, the Freezers have been using the Volksbank Arena as a training facility , which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Barclaycard Arena. In addition to the 2,600 square meter ice rink, there is also the club's new training complex. There is a total of 300 spectators in the Volksbank Arena. The hall was not only used for training units, but also for various preparation games. The construction of the arena, in which the handball players from HSV Hamburg also train, cost around 15 million euros and was largely financed by the Alexander Otto Sports Foundation.

Club structure

The Hamburg Freezers e. V. was founded in 2005 and was organized as a member association with associated fan groups. In January 2016 it had 120 members. The organs were the general assembly and the board. The Freezers were members of the Hamburg Ice Hockey and Rolling Sports Association (HERV) and the Hamburger Sportbund (HSB). The association took on various social tasks and took care of youth work. A limited liability company was responsible for professional gaming operations, which also carried out most of the organizational tasks. This company was part of the Anschutz Entertainment Group. In June 2016, Hamburg Freezers e. V. dissolved.

Representatives of the club's board of directors and the gaming company together formed the five-person presidium of the Hamburg Freezers. This included the chairman of the board of directors of the association Andreas Mattner as well as the managing director of the gaming company Uwe Frommhold as vice-president.

social commitment

The mascot, "The Freezer"

The Hamburg Freezers are committed to promoting youth sport, for example the “Freeze Style - We make school” project was founded. Here, players from the Freezers visited schools in the city of Hamburg in order to encourage the young people's interest in practicing a sport. In particular, the association took care of children and young people from the socially disadvantaged parts of the city. Furthermore, the Freezers collected donations and passed them on to schools in order to promote the maintenance of the sports equipment and halls. The club also supported the "Tripp Charity" founded by Freezers player John Tripp . Various items such as jerseys, tickets or ice hockey sticks used by the professionals were auctioned off before Hamburg's home games. The proceeds were then donated to the Kinderkrebs-Zentrum Hamburg e. V. donated. At the end of the 2008/09 season , John Tripp raised over 40,000 euros in this way.

mascot

The mascots in the 2010/11 season were the two Yetis Body and Check. They were mostly in the stands as they ran into each other on the ice when they were introduced and one of them lost his head. The old mascot, the Freezer, was abolished because it no longer brought luck.

After body and check had finally run out of rank in the LA Kings Bailey game, the mascot of the kings, body and check were mothballed in the 2011/12 season . For the opening game of the 2012/13 season, Bailey brought his "cousin" Stanley to Hamburg as a new mascot.
