DEL All-Star Game

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DEL All-Star Game was a friendly game in the German ice hockey league DEL , which took place between 1998 and 2009 shortly before the start of the season or in later years at the beginning of the year and in which star players of the league competed in two teams.

Since the introduction of the All-Star Game in the highest German ice hockey league in 1998 , it has been the custom for an All-Star team from the DEL to meet the German national team, but the format has been changed since the 2006/07 season, so on February 3rd In 2007 a DEL Europe selection against a team of North American professionals from the DEL met for the first time. On February 2, 2008, the venue was the home ground of the Dresden Ice Lions , the Freiberger Arena on Magdeburger Strasse.

Part of the show program every year, similar to the model from the NHL , was a skills competition , a competition in which, among other things, the hardest slap shot, the fastest skater or the best dribbling team is determined.

The players for the respective teams were nominated in advance by sports journalists every year and could then be voted into the teams by the ice hockey fans on the DEL homepage.

For the 2009/2010 season, the All-Star Game was suspended due to the 2010 Ice Hockey World Cup in Germany and the related scheduling problems and has not been resumed since. The Skills Competition, which was also suspended in this context, was held for the first time at the beginning of the 2015/2016 season as part of the first DEL Media Days reserved for media representatives.

idea

After the idea of an all-star game based on the American model had already arisen in 1979 among editors of the ice hockey magazine and then and in the 1980s, several selection games between Bundesliga teams and the German national team took place, this idea was adopted in 1998 by the DEL officials revived. It was hoped that the game would be as successful as the All-Star matches in the USA for more than 60 years. At the beginning of the 1998/99 season , it was finally agreed that Frankfurt would be the venue for the first All-Star encounter since the DEL was founded in 1994.

For the 2001/02 season the tradition was introduced to play the All-Star game at the beginning of a year instead of at the beginning of a new season as before. As a result, the game in this series was only played in 2002 and there was therefore no DEL All-Star Game in 2001.
