Brad Smyth (* 13. March 1973 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current - coach and functionary in the Denver Cutthroats .
Career
The 1.83 m tall winger began his career in 1990 with the London Knights in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League , for which he was on the ice for three seasons. Before his commitment by the Florida Panthers for the 1995/96 season , he was also active for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the International Hockey League and for the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League .
For the Panthers, the right-handed shooter completed 15 NHL games until 1998, after which he moved to the Los Angeles Kings , further stations in the highest North American professional league were the New York Rangers , the Nashville Predators and the Ottawa Senators . In all his years with these teams, however, Smyth failed to make the absolute breakthrough, so most of the time he was on the ice with lower-tier farm teams in IHL and AHL. His greatest success there was winning the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL, with the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2000.
Before the 2006/07 season , Brad Smyth moved from Hartford to the Freezers in Hamburg, and in his first season the right wing completed all 52 games of the season and scored 23 goals in 36 assists . Smyth was the third most successful scorer in the preliminary round with 59 points and was honored as the best new import in the league. At the 2007 DEL All-Star Game , the Canadian was also voted Most Valuable Player for Team North America .
For the 2009/10 season Smyth moved to the KHL Medveščak Zagreb , where he played one season in the Austrian ice hockey league . In October 2010 he signed a contract with the Belfast Giants from the British Elite Ice Hockey League . After two months, he decided in December 2010 to move to SHC Fassa in the A1 series . For the 2011/12 season , the Canadian was signed by the French first division club HC Morzine-Avoriaz .
For the 2012/13 season he signed a contract with the Denver Cutthroats from the Central Hockey League . The Canadian ended his career in the summer of 2014 and worked for the club as assistant coach and assistant sports director during the 2013/14 season. As a consequence of the team's sporting success and the promotion of head coach Derek Armstrong , Smyth succeeded him in summer 2014 and was also appointed Director of Hockey Operation .
In 1996 Brad Smyth was also active in Roller Hockey International , the highest North American inline hockey league, for the Ottawa Loggers .
