The Denver Cutthroats were an American ice hockey franchise based in Denver , Colorado . The team was founded on April 10, 2012 and played in the Central Hockey League (CHL) from the 2012/13 season . The team played in the 8,140-seat Denver Coliseum . The team colors are dark blue, green, red and white. The team's name is derived from the official Colorado state fish , the cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) .

history

After the number of teams in the Central Hockey League had shrunk from 18 to 14 between the 2010/11 season and the 2011/12 season , rumors of the establishment of a new franchise in the state of Colorado first surfaced in February 2012 . The team was to be named Denver Grizzlies . On April 10, 2012, the resettlement was finally confirmed at the beginning of the 2012/13 season ; as well as the fact that the team will be nicknamed Grizzlies . On May 17, 2012, the team name Cutthroats and the team logos and colors were finally presented. A month later, defender Aaron MacKenzie became the first player in franchise history to be signed.

On July 19, 2012, the Denver Cutthroats and the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League agreed to work together for one season. The Cutthroats have since acted as the so-called farm team of the Avalanche and the Lake Erie Monsters from the American Hockey League .

In August 2014, the franchise's gaming operations were discontinued, with management aiming to return to gaming operations in the 2015/16 season.
