The Austin Ice Bats were an American ice hockey team from Austin , Texas that played in the Central Hockey League , a North American minor league , from 2001 to 2008 . The team was named after the bulldog bat , which nests in the city center mainly under Congress Avenue Bridge.

history

The franchise , in 1996 as a team of Western Professional Hockey League was founded, wore its home games until the end of the 2005/06 season in the 6,500-seater Luedecke Arena in Travis County Exposition Center from, equipped with an ice surface multi-purpose arena, by the Fans received the name "Bat Cave" ( bat cave ). In the summer of 2001, the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League , in which the Ice Bats then competed.

On 5 February 2005, the citizens voted from Cedar Park , a suburb of Austin, the construction of a new, 30.8 million US dollars to expensive hall. The arena was supposed to serve as the new home of the Ice Bats, as well as a concert hall and venue for other events, but the project was never completed. On February 15, 2006, the Ice Bats finally announced that they would be leaving the Luedecke Arena in the direction of Chaparral Ice in Pflugerville . This move was completed for the 2006/07 season after renovation work in the new arena was completed. The Chaparral Ice can accommodate 2,000 spectators for ice hockey games.

In May 2008, those responsible withdrew the franchise from the Central Hockey League.
