The Columbus Cottonmouths were an American ice hockey team from Columbus , Georgia . The team played in the Southern Professional Hockey League since the 2004/05 season .

history

The Columbus Cottonmouths were founded in 1996 as a franchise of the Central Hockey League . The team was originally intended as an expansion franchise for the Southern Hockey League , but joined the CHL after it was dissolved. Columbus, which reached the playoffs in all five seasons in which it was active in the CHL, won the Miron Cup in the 1997/98 season after winning the Wichita Thunder with a sweep in the best-of- Seven series struck. After the loss of two local rivals Macon Whoopee and Huntsville Channel Cats , the Cottonmouths moved in 2001 to the East Coast Hockey League , in which they were active for three years. In this they missed the playoffs for the Kelly Cup .

Originally, the owners wanted to relocate the franchise to Florida in 2004 . However, since this failed due to a lack of financial resources, the Cottonmouths finally moved to the Southern Professional Hockey League , whose championship they won in the 2004/05 season. From 2006 Columbus was eliminated three times in a row in the first playoff round, before the team again reached the final series in the 2010/11 season and lost to the Mississippi Surge. In the 2011/12 season , the second championship title in the Southern Professional Hockey League was finally won when the team finished without defeat after victories over the Louisiana IceGators , Huntsville Havoc and Pensacola Ice Flyers and secured the President's Cup .
