The South Carolina Stingrays are an American ice hockey team from North Charleston , South Carolina , which currently plays in the ECHL . Since 2014 they are the farm team of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League . The home ground of the Stingrays is the North Charleston Coliseum , which has a capacity of 10,568 people for ice hockey games.
The team was founded in 1993 under the owner Marcel Dionne and shortly thereafter sold to a local investment group. Overall, the team was able to win the championship three times, in 1997, 2001 and 2009. They are the first team from the ECHL to win both the preliminary round champion and then the Kelly Cup .
