The Erie Panthers were an American ice hockey team from Erie , Pennsylvania . The team played in the East Coast Hockey League from 1988 to 1996 .

history

The Erie Panthers was founded in 1988 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League , in which they were one of a total of five founding members. The team replaced the Erie Golden Blades , who had played in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League from 1982 to 1987 . In their first two seasons, the team ended the regular season in first place in the ECHL, when it was not yet divided into divisions. In the playoffs for the Kelly Cup , however, they did not get beyond the second round. After they had always reached the playoffs in the first five years of their existence, they missed this three times in a row after their division into the North Division. As a result, the franchise was moved by its owners to Baton Rouge , Louisiana , where it subsequently took part in the gaming operations of ECHL under the name Baton Rouge Kingfish .

The void left by the Panthers' resettlement in the city was filled in 1996 by the Erie Otters , who have since competed in the Canadian Junior Ontario Hockey League .
