The Worcester Railers are an American ice hockey franchise from Worcester , Massachusetts , which will play in the ECHL from the start of the 2017/18 season . It acts as the farm team for the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League and plays its home games at the DCU Center .

history

From 2006 to 2015, the Worcester Sharks were the city's ice hockey team, playing in the senior American Hockey League (AHL). The Sharks were relocated to the San Jose Barracuda for the 2015/16 season and thus closer to their cooperation partner from the National Hockey League (NHL), the San Jose Sharks . In the spring of 2016, however, the ECHL announced that Worcester would get a new team for the 2017/18 season before the name Worcester Railers and its logo were presented to the public in April 2016 . About a year later, the team announced that they would cooperate with the New York Islanders from the NHL and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL as a farm team . First trainer and at the same time general manager was the Canadian Jamie Russell , who had previously looked after the Elmira Jackals in the same position .

On October 14, 2017, the Railers played their first competitive game in a 4: 3 win over the Manchester Monarchs . At the end of the first season, the team promptly managed to reach the ECHL playoffs.
