The Miami Matadors were an American ice hockey team based in Miami , Florida . The team played in the East Coast Hockey League in the 1998/99 season .
history
The Louisville River Frogs from the East Coast Hockey League were three years after their formation following the 1997/98 season to Miami, Florida, relocated and renamed Miami Matadors. There was a franchise , a farm team of the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League . The Matadors played during their only season, the 1998/99 season, in which they were seventh in the Southeast Division and missed the playoffs for the Kelly Cup , in the oversized Miami Arena . Since this had a spectator capacity of 14,823, the management of the matadors decided to open only the lower tier at home games, which reduced the capacity to 6,351 spectators. But even with the reduced capacity, not a single home game of the entire season was sold out. Therefore, it was decided to play the last two home games in the Germain Arena in Estero , Florida.
After the franchise was inactive for two years, the former owners sold the ECHL license to the Cincinnati Cyclones from the disbanded International Hockey League .
