The Raleigh IceCaps were an American ice hockey franchise based in Raleigh , North Carolina . The venue for the IceCaps was the Dorton Arena .

history

The franchise was founded in 1991 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . Head coach was Kurt Kleinendorst , who later also trained the Lowell Devils in the AHL. The IceCaps reached the playoffs in their first season and failed in the round of playoffs against the Hampton Roads Admirals . Already in the following season the IceCaps achieved a better result by reaching the third playoff round, which they even surpassed in the 1993/94 season with their entry into the finals of the Kelly Cup against Toledo Storm . The series was lost with 4-1 wins and the IceCaps missed winning the Kelly Cup. By 1998, the Raleigh IceCaps made it into the play-offs only once in the last four seasons of the franchise. In 1998, the franchise was finally disbanded and relocated to Augusta because of the Carolina Hurricanes , who moved to Raleigh and took the place of the IceCaps as an NHL team . A new team was formed there under the name Augusta Lynx , which was given a right to play in the ECHL.
