history

The forerunners of the Jacksonville Icemen were the Evansville IceMen , which also ran into the ECHL from 2012 to 2016 . During the 2015/16 season, all negotiations between the team and the city of Evansville about a new lease for its home ground, the Ford Center, failed . As a result, owner Ron Geary announced the team's move to Owensboro , Kentucky , in January 2016 . Another month later, the ECHL confirmed the move of the IceMen to Owensboro, although the team should not start playing until the 2017/18 season to allow enough time for renovations at the new venue. In September 2016 Geary announced, however, that the renovations to the arena ( Owensboro Sports Center ) would be significantly more complex and expensive than originally thought, so that the final decision was made against the purchase and relocation of the team to Owensboro. In February 2017, it was announced that ECHL had agreed to move the team to Jacksonville , Florida . In July 2017, the team announced a collaboration with the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League and the Manitoba Moose from the American Hockey League (AHL).

The first head coach was the Canadian Jason Christie , who had previously looked after numerous ECHL teams, including the Utah Grizzlies , the Ontario Reign and the Tulsa Oilers .
