history

The Columbus Chill was founded in 1991 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League . After they had missed him the playoffs for the Kelly Cup in their first two seasons , they reached the second playoff round in the 1993/94 season after a second place in the North Division and a first-round victory over the Johnstown Chiefs they succumbed to the later master Toledo Storm in the best-of-five series with a sweep . The team from Ohio also reached the second playoff round in the 1996/97 and 1998/99 seasons. The franchise then became inactive in order not to have to compete with the newly founded Columbus Blue Jackets from the National Hockey League , which started playing in the 2000/01 season .

In the summer of 2001, the team was relocated to Reading , Pennsylvania , where it has since participated in ECHL's gaming operations under the name Reading Royals .
