Together with the daily newspaper "The Examiner" from Independence, the team owners of Independence Professional Hockey, LLC organized a competition to find the new team name, which lasted until May 11th, 2009. The name Missouri Mavericks , which emerged from this competition, was finally introduced along with the logo and the club colors on June 24, 2009.

On October 7, 2014, the Mavericks and the other six remaining CHL participants were inducted into the ECHL . The CHL's game operations were discontinued due to fewer teams.
