He then coached teams in the Central Hockey League , ECHL and Western Hockey League .
Career
Richard Matvichuk began his career as a hockey player with the Saskatoon Blades , for which he was active from 1989 to 1992 in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as the eighth player by the Minnesota North Stars . For Minnesota, the defender scored two goals in 53 games in his rookie year in the National Hockey League in the 1992/93 season and made three assists. Even after the franchise moved to Dallas and renamed Dallas Stars , he remained loyal to the stars. As in Minnesota, he ran in his first two years with the Texans in parallel for their farm team , the Kalamazoo Wings from the International Hockey League .
With the Dallas Stars, Matvichuk achieved his greatest success in the 1998/99 season when he won the Stanley Cup with his team . After spending a total of twelve years in the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars franchise, the Canadian signed a contract with their league rivals New Jersey Devils as a free agent on July 12, 2004 . During the subsequent lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season, Matvichuk paused with ice hockey - he signed a contract with HC Slovan Bratislava , but did not play a game for the team. From 2005 to 2007, the former international was exclusively for New Jersey in the NHL on the ice, although he could complete only one game of the regular season in the 2006/07 season due to a back injury. After a season in the farm team from the American Hockey League New Jerseys, the Lowell Devils , he ended his active career in 2008 at the age of 35.
From the 2012/13 season Matvichuk worked as assistant coach and general manager of the Allen Americans in the Central Hockey League . After two years there, the Canadian was head coach and director of hockey operations of the Missouri Mavericks from the ECHL at the beginning of the 2014/15 season . In 2016, he was honored with the John Brophy Award for the league's best coach and the ECHL General Manager of the Year Award . For the 2016/17 season he moved to the head coach of the Prince George Cougars from the Western Hockey League. There he was released from his duties during the 2018/19 season after more than two years of work.
International
For Canada , Matvichuk took part in the 1992 World Junior Championship and the 2002 World Championship . He finished both tournaments with the team in sixth place.
