The Kalamazoo Wings (between 1995 and 2000 Michigan K-Wings ) were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League from Kalamazoo , Michigan . The home ground was the Wings Stadium .

history

In 1974 the Wings franchise was founded in Kalamazoo and accepted into the IHL. The team reached the playoffs in the second season, but was eliminated in the first round. A year later it reached the second round.

The franchise reached its peak in the late 1970s: winning the Turner Cup twice , the IHL championship trophy. After that, it stayed in the midfield of the league.

From 1987 to 1991 long-time NHL player of the Chicago Black Hawks , John Marks , was the head coach behind the gang. Although he achieved a positive season balance with the team, the team was eliminated in the play-offs in the first and second round from the competition.

On May 16, 1995, the owners of Kalamazoo Wings decided to rename the franchise Michigan K-Wings . The Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League were found as partners . The K-Wings were the stars' farm team from the 1995/96 season . In their first season after the renaming, the K-Wings could reach the second round of the play-offs. This was followed by two defeats in the first round in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons, before the team reached the second round again in 1998/99.

The 1999/2000 season was the last before the club was dissolved. In this, the team had only 78 points after the main round of the East Division of the IHL. With this value, the K-Wings only took sixth place in the East Division. The team missed the play-offs for the first time since 1993. Subsequently, the partnership with the Dallas Stars was ended by their management at the time and the Michigan K-Wings dissolved.
