Derek Plante (born January 17, 1971 in Cloquet , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabers , the Dallas Stars , the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers . In the DEL he was active for the Munich Barons and the Adler Mannheim . Since June 2010 he has been an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth .

Career

The 1.80 meter tall center began his career in the team of the University of Minnesota Duluth in the game operations of the NCAA , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft as 161st in the eighth round of the Buffalo Sabers .

In the 1993/94 season he completed his first NHL games for the Sabers, in which he quickly became a regular player. With the franchise from the state of New York , the left-handed shooter won the division title of the Northeast Division in 1997 , during the 1998/99 season he left the Sabers in the direction of the Dallas Stars, with whom he was able to win the Stanley Cup that same year . Curiously, this happened against his old team, the Buffalo Sabers, against whom the Stars won the final with four to two games. In the following season , Plante was only sporadically used by the stars, so that he was transferred to league rivals Chicago Blackhawks during the season. But here, too, as in his last NHL station, the Philadelphia Flyers, the striker was used alternately in the top division and with lower-class farm teams in IHL and AHL .

For the 2001/02 season , the Canadian signed a contract with the Munich Barons, for which he was on the ice for a season and which he then left for the ZSC Lions . After a year in the Swiss National League A , Plante moved to Adler Mannheim, for whom he played for two years. He ended his career after the 2007/08 season, which he completed for the Swiss NLB team from SC Langenthal .

International

For the US national ice hockey team , Derek Plante played the world championships in 1992 , 1993 , 1996 and 2000 to 2002 and won the bronze medal once (1996).

Trainer

In June 2010, he became an assistant coach with the Bulldogs at the University of Minnesota Duluth . With these he won the US college championship of the NCAA for the first time in his first season 2010/11, the greatest success for the university's men's ice hockey ever.
