The SC Langenthal (completely: Schlittschuh-Club Langenthal ) is a Swiss ice hockey club from Langenthal . He has played in the second-rate Swiss League since 2002 .

history

In the 2001/02 season, SC Langenthal, as Swiss amateur champions, was promoted to the second-rate National League B , in which it has played since then, having previously played in the first division, the third-highest division, for a long time. In the 2002/03 season , the team achieved six wins and five draws and reached tenth place. In the following season , the team reached the play-offs for the first time . In the semifinals, the team was eliminated against EHC Basel .

In the 2005/06 season , SC Langenthal was the league's surprise. For a long time he was in first place in the table, but was ousted by Biel and Sierre towards the end of the qualification and finished the main round in third place. As in the previous season, the yellow and blue were eliminated in the semifinals. This time not with a 0: 4, but in the decider with 3: 4. In the 2006/07 season , SC Langenthal clearly won the qualification and was the leader for a long time. From this season you could choose your opponent for the quarter-final pairing. The SCL selected the GCK Lions who had completed the qualification as 7th. GCK Lions took a 3-0 lead in the best of seven series. The SCL was able to react and shortened to 2: 3, in the sixth game the GCK Lions made everything clear and won the series 4: 2.

Since the 2001/02 season, SC Langenthal's team budget has increased annually from CHF 0.7 million to CHF 3.5 million in the 2007/08 season.

The qualification of the 2007-08 season joined the SC Langenthal from sixth. The SCL was selected by HC La Chaux-de-Fonds , who had completed the qualification in third position. The SCL lost the series against La Chaux-de-Fonds with 0: 4 (2: 4, 3: 4, 1: 2, 3: 4). Also in the 2008/09 season Langenthal failed in the playoff quarter-finals at La Chaux-de-Fonds.

In the 2009/10 season , the seventh rank was occupied. For the play-off quarter-finals, the SCL was chosen as an opponent by local rivals EHC Olten . This dispute was marked by the fact that the SCL, shortly before the start of the series, had signed the foreigners Brent Kelly and Jeff Campbell , who were still under contract with EHC Olten, and the Swiss player Mathias Brägger for the coming season. The three formed the first line of storms in Olten. In seven heavily attended games in Olten and Langenthal, the SCL lost 3: 4.

In the 2011/12 season , SC Langenthal became NLB Swiss champions for the first time in the club's history. The team finished the qualification in second place behind Lausanne HC . In the quarter-finals, the playoffs against the EHC Basel Sharks , the SCL prevailed with 4-0 wins and qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in six years. In this, the Langenthaler defeated HC La Chaux-de-Fonds in a series that went over the maximum distance of seven games. SC Langenthal won the decisive seventh game at the Schoren ice rink in front of 3741 spectators thanks to goals from Noël Guyaz and Jeff Campbell with 2-1. In the playoff final, SC Langenthal met Lausanne HC. After two defeats at the beginning, the SCL turned the best-of-seven series and prevailed with 4-2 wins. In the sold-out Schoren Stadium, SC Langenthal became Swiss champions in the National League B for the first time in club history. The league qualification against HC Ambrì-Piotta ultimately went to Ambrì with 4-1 wins. The Schorenhalle was completely sold out twice with 4,800 spectators.

In the 2012/13 season , the SCL took second place in qualification. In the playoff quarter-finals, he defeated the GCK Lions with 4-0 wins. In the semifinals, the SCL failed again after 2010 against local rivals EHC Olten with 2: 4 wins. Langenthal ended the 2013/14 season in third qualifying place. In the playoff quarter-finals, Basel was initially defeated 4-1. In the semifinals, the EHC Visp prevailed with 4: 3 wins against the SCL.

In the 2015/16 season , SC Langenthal finished the qualification in second place, as in the championship season. In the playoff quarter-finals, the team had to admit defeat to seventh HC Red Ice Martigny after six games . Marc Eichmann , who had played most of the NLB games for the club, announced his retirement during the season. He is now the Chief Financial Officer of SCL AG.

In the 2016/17 season, the SCL won the championship in the NLB for the second time in the club's history. In the final, the team supervised by coach Jason O'Leary prevailed with 4: 3 wins against SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers and on the way to the title compensated for the failure of his point-best striker Jeff Campbell, who suffered a knee injury before the final series would have. The promotion to the NLA failed, however, as they were inferior to HC Ambrì-Piotta with 0: 4 wins in the league qualification.

Head coach O'Leary left the club after the 2016/17 season and switched to the coaching staff of Genève-Servette HC as an assistant , followed by the Swede Per Hånberg as the new coach at SCL. In the 2017/18 season, the team reached second place in qualification. The desired final could not be reached: The SCL was eliminated after winning a quarter-final series against EHC Visp (4: 2 wins) in the semifinals against EHC Olten after five games with 1: 4 wins. Hånberg led the team to win the championship title in the Swiss League in spring 2019, in the final La Chaux-de-Fonds, which had previously won the qualification, was defeated with 4-0 victories. This was the third league title in the country's second-highest division in the club's history. The defensive stability of the team was seen as a guarantee for winning the title.
