The 2019/20 season was the 73rd regular staging of the second division in Swiss ice hockey .

Championship cancellation

Due to the coronavirus epidemic , the federal government decided on February 28, 2020 to ban events with more than 1000 participants until March 15, 2020. The National League therefore decided to play the fourth round of the playoff quarter-finals and the placement games on February 28, 2020 and March 1, 2020 without a spectator. After that, the league suspended the game for the time being. On March 11, 2020, the canton of Ticino declared a state of emergency. As a consequence, all ice rinks in the canton of Ticino were closed. As a result, regular championship operation was no longer possible, so that the association ended the championship in all leagues and levels after consulting the clubs. In addition, there were no Swiss champions, neither promoted nor relegated.

mode

The twelve teams played two double rounds of 22 games each. In total, each team played 44 qualifying games. Then the best eight teams should determine the Swiss League champions in the knockout system. All playoff series were scheduled according to the best-of-seven mode. If the SL champion has received a license for the National League , he should then be able to qualify for a league with the bottom of the National League . For the first time since 2015/16 it should be possible for a relegated team this season. The teams in positions nine to twelve therefore contest a placement round. The last one threatened a league qualification with the champions of the MySports League .
