The Swiss Arena , officially known as Schluefweg until 2008 , is a leisure and sports facility in Kloten in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . The ice rink contained in it is the home of the Swiss League Club EHC Kloten .
history
After it was founded in 1934, the EHC Kloten trained and played on the local Nägelimoos pond. Since the water, which was frozen over in winter, tended to break open and some games had to be canceled, an ice rink with natural ice was built in 1952 south of Kloten, back then in the middle of the forest. The ice hockey club moved there that same year. At that time the facility was still called the Waldstadion.
In 1977 the old grandstand was renewed and strengthened, which was also covered. In 1982 the cloakrooms, a restaurant, as well as the north stand and an underground car park followed. A second open ice rink was created in front of the stadium. In 1997 the stadium was renovated again. The grandstand was completely closed around the ice and the roof was replaced by a steel structure. At that time, the Schluefweg was one of the most modern stadiums in Switzerland. The stadium has a capacity of 7,624 spectators, 2,300 of which are standing and 5,324 seats. International ice hockey matches are also played in the stadium.
From 1997 to 2004 the Zurich Open (then the Swisscom Challenge ) in women's tennis was held in Schluefweg.
In August 2008, the insurance company Kolping Krankenkassen AG acquired the naming rights to the ice hockey stadium of the sports complex for seven years. In the same year, the stadium was changed a little for the ice hockey world championship in Switzerland, for example a video cube was installed.
The arena was given a new name for the 2015/16 season. The airline Swiss International Air Lines acquired the naming rights in February 2015 for an initial six years. The ice hockey stadium has been called the Swiss Arena since May 1st, 2015 .
The floorball superfinal has been taking place in the arena since 2015 and the Swiss champions are crowned in one game .
