The 2009/10 season was the 63rd regular hosting of the second-class Swiss National League B . The Lausanne HC won his second NLB championship in a row. Due to a lack of interest, no team from the 1st division had been promoted to the National League B.

Attendees

The NLB 2009/10 was started with 11 teams because the Swiss U20 national ice hockey team no longer took part in this division as a visiting team. After the withdrawal of the HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters on October 29, 2009, ten teams remained in the league.

The following ten teams belonged to the second division in the 2009/10 season:

mode

Two double rounds of 20 games each should be played. After that, the original mode saw a simple round of placement of the seven best teams for the standings after qualification (additional 6 games) as well as a round of hope for the other 4 teams who determine the last playoff participant.

Due to the withdrawal of HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters and the associated reduction in the number of games per team from 40 to 36, the "Schweizerische Eishockey Nationalliga GmbH" decided to change the mode. Instead of the placement and hope round, another simple round was held. All results of the Young Sprinters were canceled. After 36 rounds, the placement decided the number of home games for the last nine rounds. The teams in ranks one to five were allowed to play five, the teams in ranks six to ten four more home games.

The eight best teams after 45 match days competed for the Swiss B champions in play-off style.

Quarter-finals, semi-finals and final were each played according to the best-of-seven mode . The winner of the final played a relegation in best-of-seven against the loser of the NLA play-outs .
