The 1985/86 season was the 39th regular staging of the National League B , the second highest Swiss league in ice hockey . The EHC Chur rose as champions directly into the National League A in. After EHC Arosa voluntarily relegated to the first division, SC Bern was also allowed to rise. The Lausanne HC and Geneve-Servette HC went directly to the third-highest division, the first league from.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played 36 games. The four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs, the finalists of which both went straight to the NLA. The last two in the main round were relegated directly to the third division. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
