history

The EHC Chur was founded in 1933. In 2000, EHC Chur Sport AG split off from the club and took over the operations of the 1st team in the national league . The club was renamed EHC Chur Capricorns and was exclusively responsible for the junior teams. After two years in the NLA, the EHC was relegated to the NLB in 2002. That spring he was denied his license by the national league because of financial problems, which resulted in his forced relegation to the first division . After just one season, the return to the NLB and the win of the Swiss amateur championship could be celebrated. After returning to the NLB, the city club was faced with an icy wind in both sporting and financial terms. There was good news to report in 2006: The Schmalspur Bar, a bar in downtown Chur run on a voluntary basis by fans, started operations and has been supporting the city club's youngsters with several 10,000 francs per year with its earnings. In 2008 the club voluntarily withdrew into the amateur sector and EHC Chur Sport AG had to file for bankruptcy. Since then, the EHC Chur Capricorns club has been responsible for all teams and game operations.

After only one season in the first division, the next setback for the club followed in the 2008/2009 season: the first team was relegated to the second division. For two seasons, EHC Chur had to play in the provincial league, where outdoor games are part of everyday life. The club was able to cope with the 2-year abstinence from the highest amateur league and rose on March 22, 2011. At that time, EHC Chur defeated EHC Seewen 4-3 in the 2nd league playoff final at home in front of 1,625 spectators.

After the promotion, the EHC Chur could always qualify for the play-offs. They failed in the first three years in the quarter-finals (2 × against Winterthur, 1 × against Chiasso). Before the 2014/2015 season, the club was on the verge of bankruptcy. This was averted when fresh forces around the newly elected board delegate Urs Knuchel reared up and were able to get the ship back on course. After the disturbances followed sporting the best season since the voluntary descent from the National League B . After third place in the qualification / master round, the play-off quarter-finals and the semi-finals were won without defeat. The EHC Chur was only stopped in the final by the later Swiss amateur champion and promoted to the National League B, EHC Winterthur . Furthermore, EHC Chur qualified for the Swiss Ice Hockey Cup 2015/2016 after victories against Winterthur and Pikes Oberthurgau .

In the 1/16 final, the EHC Chur met the 2015 runner-up in the National League A , the ZSC Lions, in the indoor stadium . The game ended in front of 5,026 spectators with 2-9 for the ZSC Lions. On June 17, 2015, an amendment to the Articles of Association was carried out at the Annual General Meeting; the association appears again externally as “EHC Chur”; the name "Capricorns" was dropped.

EHC Chur has been playing in the newly founded MySports League since the 2017/18 season . In December 2017 the Hallenstadion was named Thomas Domenig Stadium . In 2018, the league was clearly secured in terms of points, but the playoffs were out of reach. In the 2018/19 season, EHC Chur played at the bottom of the table from the start and had to fight to keep the league until the end. Only in the last game against EHC Seewen was Lukas Sieber able to keep the league thanks to an overtime goal thanks to a better direct encounter and goal difference compared to Star Forward Morges.

In contrast to the two previous seasons, the 2019/20 season was much more successful from the start. The team was able to establish itself in the balanced midfield right away and reached the playoffs with fourth place. In these, the EHC was defeated by SC Lyss with 0: 4. In addition, this season the average number of spectators per game increased to 900 (average attendance 2018/19 521), including two cantonal derbies against EHC Arosa. The second of these derbies was sold out with 2,800 spectators; this was also the best-attended game in the MySports League in the 2019/2020 season.
