Stephan was drawn in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in 34th place in the second round by the Dallas Stars . Until the 2005/06 season , Tobias Stephan played in the Swiss National League A with the Kloten Flyers , where he also played in the Junior League. In 2005/06 he played 55 games for the Flyers, including play-offs , making him the undisputed goalkeeper. He had five shutouts and an average of 2.79 conceded. Stephan also recorded three assists for himself. His time in Kloten was interrupted by a season (2001/02) at EHC Chur .

In preparation for the 2006/07 season , Stephan stayed at the Dallas Stars training camp. After they had not renewed the contract of their substitute goalkeeper Johan Hedberg (moved to Atlanta ), Stephan competed with Mike Smith for the role of second goalkeeper behind Marty Turco . However, Smith prevailed, so that Tobias Stephan was sent to the farm team of the stars, the Iowa Stars , in the American Hockey League . There he shared the goalkeeping position with Steve Silverthorn . On October 13, 2007, Stephan made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars. Stephan had a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars and was second goalkeeper for the Dallas Stars after the departure of Mike Smith in the 2008-09 season .

For the 2009/10 season Stephan returned to Switzerland and received a contract with Genève-Servette HC , for which he was active as a regular goalkeeper until 2014. In 2010 he was the Swiss runner-up with the Geneva team. In October 2013, Stephan signed a three-year contract with EV Zug , valid from the 2014/15 season . With the Central Swiss he reached the final series twice, but never won the title. Due to Zug's signing of Leonardo Genoni from SC Bern , Stephan's contract for the 2019/20 season was no longer extended, after which he moved to French- speaking Switzerland to Lausanne HC .

International

Tobias Stephan represented Switzerland in the junior division at the U18 Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2002 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2002 and 2003 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the A World Championships in 2003 , 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . In 2013 Stephan was also in the national team and won the silver medal. However, he did not play a game.
