Player career
Peltonen started his professional career at the Finnish ice hockey club HIFK Helsinki in the SM-liiga . In 1995 he moved to the USA to play in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks , who had drafted him in the third round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in 58th place. After two seasons he returned to Europe for Frölunda HC in the Swedish Elitserien for a year . In 1998 there was another attempt in North America, where he was in action for the Nashville Predators . In 2001 Peltonen was transferred back to Europe, where he played for Jokerit Helsinki in the SM-liiga for two years . After three successful seasons and a Swiss championship title with HC Lugano , Peltonen tried again in the NHL, this time with the Florida Panthers .
In the 2009/10 season he played at HK Dinamo Minsk in the Continental Hockey League before returning to his hometown club HIFK in July 2010. With this he won the Finnish championship in the 2010/11 season before ending his career in March 2014, after three more seasons with the HIFK.
International
Peltonen played regularly on the Finnish national ice hockey team . A particular success for him was his hat trick in the 1995 World Ice Hockey Championship final against Sweden. Finland won 4-1 and became world champions for the first time. In 2006 he won the silver medal with the Finnish team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin. Four years later, at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he won the bronze medal.
Coaching career
Immediately after the end of his playing career in 2014, Peltonen took over the post of head coach of the U20 team at his home club HIFK. He was also appointed assistant coach of the Finnish national team in 2014 and worked in this role under Kari Jalonen at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships as well as the 2014/15 and 2015/16 Euro Hockey Tour .
In April 2016, Peltonen moved to SC Bern together with Jalonen and was again employed there as an assistant coach. In 2017 he was involved in winning the Swiss championship as an assistant coach. After the end of the 2017/18 season, he left the SCB and took up the post of head coach at the national league team Lausanne HC . Under his leadership, Lausanne reached the semi-finals of the championship round in spring 2019, and at the end of February 2020 he was dismissed from the LHC for sporting reasons.
