Joshua "Josh" Jooris (born July 14, 1990 in Burlington , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Lausanne HC from the Swiss National League since June 2019, where he plays in the center position. His father, Mark Jooris, was also a professional ice hockey player and coach.

Career

Youth and education

Josh Jooris was born in 1990 into a sporty family with Belgian roots. His grandfather was already active as a professional soccer player, while his father, Mark Jooris, earned his living as a professional ice hockey player in the American Hockey League and the German Ice Hockey League . He started playing ice hockey at the age of three and grew up partly in his Canadian homeland and partly in Europe, where his father was under contract.

In his hometown of Burlington, Josh Jooris went through the youth departments of the Burlington Eagles and later that of the Burlington Cougars . He played for the latter in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) and in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) - two junior leagues that are not among the three top junior leagues in Canada . Jooris received less attention from scouts and was consequently not selected in the NHL Entry Draft . He then enrolled at the American Union College in the state of New York and from then on played for their ice hockey team, the Union Dutchmen , in ECAC Hockey , a university league of the NCAA . At the university he began studying psychology .

In his three years at Union College, the center achieved stable scorer points (32-28-28) every season. With the team he won the play-offs of the ECAC and thus the Whitelaw Cup , which is synonymous with qualifying for the qualifying games for the national championship of all university teams in the USA in the last two years . In the 2011/12 season they advanced to the semifinals and thus into the Frozen Four , where they were defeated by Ferris State University .

Calgary Flames

Jooris had already attended a training camp for the Boston Bruins in summer 2011 and one of the Vancouver Canucks the following year , but was unable to prevail in either. He tried the same the following year with the Calgary Flames , which then equipped him with an entry level contract for the National Hockey League (NHL) in July 2013 . As a result, he left Union College before the senior year and did not complete his psychology degree. In order to grant him playing time, the center was initially sent to the American Hockey League (AHL) to the Abbotsford Heat , the farm team of the Calgary Flames. There he spent the entire 2013/14 season, scoring 11 goals and providing 16 assists in 73 games. After he spent the beginning of the following season with the Adirondack Flames , the Flames ' new farm team, he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time after two AHL games; The reason was an injury to David Jones . In his debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets he scored directly, and two weeks later he scored a brace against the Canadiens de Montréal , which solidified his position in the NHL squad.

New York, Arizona, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Toronto

After three years in the organization of the Flames, Jooris did not get a new contract after the 2015/16 season, so he joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2016 . For the Rangers he completed twelve NHL games before he should be sent to the AHL via the waiver , with the center forward from the Arizona Coyotes . In Arizona, Jooris ended the season and subsequently joined the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent in July 2017 . However, the Hurricanes handed the attacker over to the Pittsburgh Penguins by the trade deadline in February 2018 after a little over six months . In return, Pittsburgh sent Greg McKegg to Carolina. In July 2018, Jooris signed a one-year contract as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he played exclusively in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies during the season. In June 2019 he signed a contract with Lausanne HC from the Swiss National League .
