Cory Emmerton (born June 1, 1988 in St. Thomas , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey striker who has been under contract with Lausanne HC in the Swiss National League since October 2018 .
Career
Cory Emmerton first played in lower-class Canadian junior leagues before the attacker went on the ice from 2004 for the Kingston Frontenacs in the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey League . In his debut season he got 38 scorer points in 58 games, but the team with the penultimate place in the Eastern Conference did not qualify for the playoffs . In his second season Emmerton was already one of the most important players in the Frontenacs. He was the team's top player with 26 goals and 64 assists and came eleventh in the OHL's scorer ranking. In the playoffs he scored two goals and his team was eliminated in the first round. In April 2006, Emmerton played with the Canadian youth team at the U18 World Junior Championship , where they finished fourth.
Although he was one of the best scorers of the season and was ranked tenth of all North American outfield players of his year by the talent scouts of the National Hockey League , the Detroit Red Wings only selected him in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft at position 41.
In the 2006/07 season Emmerton started as one of the leading players in the OHL with 58 scorer points in 35 games before he broke his ankle in December 2006. After the nine-week injury break, he returned in March 2007 and finally ended the season with 66 points. He was also able to build on the performances in the playoffs and scored five goals in five games, but the Frontenacs did not get beyond the first round again. Only a little later he was appointed for the first time in the squad of the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the American Hockey League , and played two playoff games for them.
In the fall of 2007, he competed with a Canadian U20 selection in the eight-game Super Series against a Russian national team of the same age group, which Canada could win with seven wins and one draw. Emmerton was used seven times, but remained without a scorer point. Shortly thereafter, he was invited to the Detroit Red Wings training camp for the first time and played a preparatory game with the NHL team, before returning to the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL.
Due to his performance over the past two seasons, Emmerton was one of the favorites for the title of best scorer in the 2007/08 season. In his first 24 games he had a good result with 31 points, but fell short of the high expectations. In addition, he was then transferred within the league to the Brampton Battalion and had to pause several games because he was sick with glandular fever . He played the rest of the season with a solid performance and scored twelve goals and 18 assists, but could not match the form of previous years. In the playoffs, the battalion failed to outsider Barrie Colts and Emmerton moved to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL in March 2008, where he contributed an assist in seven games. A month later he was invited to the training camp of the Canadian senior team, but was not intended for the World Cup and only played in preparation games.
The 2008/09 season he finally played in the AHL at the Grand Rapids Griffins. Emmerton performed well, but often showed a lack of consistency. If he collected nine scorer points in eight games in November 2008, he then needed over two months to achieve the same yield. After several players were appointed to the NHL in February 2009, Emmerton was able to increase his offensive play again. In the course of the 2011/12 season he finally earned a regular place in the NHL squad of the Detroit Red Wings.
In November 2013, Emmerton was placed on the waiver and then given to the Grand Rapids Griffins . However, he stayed there for less than two weeks, as he was called back to the NHL squad due to the injuries of Henrik Zetterberg and Pawel Dazjuk .
In May 2014 Emmerton moved to HK Sotschi , a newly founded KHL club that started playing for the 2014/15 season. He scored 17 goals and 12 assists in 64 games for Sochi in the club's first KHL season before moving to HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A in June 2015 . In the following three years Emmerton played over 170 competitive games for the HCAP and was able to avert relegation from the NLA in 2017.
In the summer of 2018 he switched to the KHL for HK Sibir Novosibirsk , but returned to Switzerland after eleven games without a scorer point and was signed by Lausanne HC .
