The Kingston Frontenacs are a Canadian ice hockey team based in Kingston , Ontario . The team was founded in 1989 as a youth team and has since played in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

history

In 1989, the rights to the Kingston Raiders were sold to a group of investors that also included two former ice hockey players, Wren Blair and Bob Attersley , who renamed the franchise Kingston Frontenacs. The name was based on the Kingston Frontenacs from the Eastern Professional Hockey League , for which both had played. In its twenty-year existence, the team has only won one division title so far (as of 2009) when they won the Leyden Trophy as the winner of the East Division in 1994/95 . In addition, the team reached the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup in the 1992/93 season , in which it was subject to the Peterborough Petes . After nine years, the franchise was sold to the Springer family in 1998, after which Doug Springer became the owner and chairman of the Kingston Frontenacs.

After the Sudbury Wolves , the franchise is the second most unsuccessful in the Ontario Hockey League and the fourth most unsuccessful in the entire Canadian Hockey League .
