The Guelph Platers were a Canadian ice hockey team based in Guelph , Ontario . The team played from 1982 to 1989 in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
history
The Guelph CMC’s , which were active in the Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League (SOJHL), were bought in 1975 by the Holody family, who first renamed the franchise Guelph Holody Platers and let it play in the SOJHL for another two years. After the league was dissolved in 1977, Guelph joined with another team of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" League , in which they were represented for the following five years.
Before the 1983/83 season , the Platers were accepted into the Ontario Hockey League after their request had been rejected several times in previous years. After they missed the playoffs in their first three OHL seasons, the Guelph Platers first won the J. Ross Robertson Cup in the 1985/86 season when they prevailed against the Belleville Bulls in the final . The team then qualified for the Memorial Cup , which they also won. In the final, Guelph beat the Hull Olympiques 5-2. Subsequently, however, the Platers did not get beyond the first playoff round, so that the franchise was relocated to Owen Sound , Ontario in 1989 , where it was henceforth active as Owen Sound Platers in the OHL.
