Owen Sound is the seat of Gray County , Ontario , Canada . Located at the mouth of the Pottawatomi and Sydenham Rivers in Georgian Bay , the town has 21,688 inhabitants.
history
The Upper Great Lakes area was explored in 1815 by William Fitzwilliam Owen and Lieutenant Henry W. Bayfield. The bay was named "Owen's Sound" in honor of Admiral Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen. That was the older brother of the explorer Owen.
The city was initially known as Sydenham and was settled by Charles Rankin in 1841. The area had previously been inhabited by the Ojibway people. In 1851 the city got its current name. For a long time, Owen Sound was an important port city. It was known as the " Chicago of the North". Its location on Georgian Bay allowed access to the Upper Great Lakes, and the main rail links carried goods south. After the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway , the port experienced a decline. The sea route enables ships to travel directly between the Upper and Lower Great Lakes.
Owen Sound is on the one hand the gateway to a recreational region and on the other hand the heart of Ontario's beef, apple and corn region.
