Ernst Bucher

Ernst Bucher (* 1934 in Zurich ) is a Swiss physicist . He is considered a pioneer in the field of solar research .

Bucher first studied mathematics and physics at the ETH Zurich . In 1962 he received his doctorate with distinction. After intermediate stops in Geneva and the United States, he became full professor of applied solid state physics at the University of Konstanz in 1974 , where he retired in 2002 . Between 1978 and 1994 he was also head of the Center II for Solar Energy. He made a particular contribution to his research on the use of dysprosium single crystals for energy generation.

In 1992 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . On April 20, 2013 Ernst Bucher was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
